1. Develop and grow in my understanding of the roles and responsibilities of my position.
- Attend Annual Fall conference for the Association of Executive Presbyters (AEPS)
- Attend Monthly Executive Presbyters Forum in Pasadena
- Spend two days each quarter with mentor, Ken Working (EP, Santa Barbara Presbytery)
Update:
- I attended the AEPS conference in Denver, Co. in late November. I continue to attend each of the monthly EP Forum meetings in Pasadena. I made two trips to Santa Barbara in 2002. Ken Working and I discussed issues related to COM, Personnel, Standing Rules, Racial Ethnic CLP/NCD ministries and Pastoral Enrichment ministries.
2. Develop and nurture a healthy relationship with each one of the churches in the Presbytery.
- Worship in each church in the Presbytery by 12/31/02
- Preach (when invited) in ten churches in the Presbytery by 12/31/02
- Meet with at least one active pastor from each church in the Presbytery by 12/31/02
Update:
- As of 12/31/02, I have worshiped in 26 of the 37 churches in our Presbytery (The San Diego Presbytery contains 32 Chartered Churches, 3 NCD's and 2 Mission Churches). I have preached in 21 of the churches in our Presbytery. I have met individually with pastors from 30 of the churches in our Presbytery including 4 NCD pastors. I have assisted in officer training workshops for Fallbrook Pres. and Solana Beach Pres. I preached at the All Church Retreat for Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in early November.
3. Participate in the restructuring of all Presbytery Committees so as to create and enhance a missional focus in all ministries of the Presbytery.
- Work with Council to establish a task force to restructure all Presbytery Committees
- Serve actively on the Restructuring Task Force as an ex-officio member
Update:
- I participated actively in each of the meetings of the Task Force on Restructuring of all Presbytery Committees. The Task Force presented a finished product (New Organizational Chart) at the September meeting of Presbytery. The new organizational chart was adopted. The final copy of the rewritten Standing Rules (The Manual) was presented and adopted at the November meeting of Presbytery. Implementation stages begin in early 2003.
4. Work with the Personnel Committee in reviewing all Presbytery personnel and policies.
- Review current organizational chart of Presbytery Office Staff.
- Establish new organizational chart with clear lines of authority/accountability.
Update:
- All Personnel evaluations for 2002 have been completed. A new configuration of the Presbytery Office Personnel with clear lines of authority and accountability will be finalized in early 2003. A newly created Office Manager position will replace two Administrative Assistant positions. The Controller position will move to part time with the addition of a full charge bookkeeper. The budget for 2003 will reflect these personnel changes.
5. Work with the Committee on Ministry in reviewing, restructuring and revitalizing their work.
- Meet bi-monthly with Chair of COM to discuss major COM issues
- Work with Chair and three Vice-Chairs to restructure/reorganize/revitalize COM
Update:
- I met regularly with Glen Spearman in 2002 to discuss current issues facing the COM. "Training for all COM members" has been identified as the top priority of the COM leadership at this time. A Synod-sponsored training day for COM/CPM is scheduled for on March 1st of 2003.
6. Work with Budget, Property and Finance Committee in reviewing and revitalizing their work.
- Work with Chair to be proactive in addressing projected budget shortfalls in 2002-2003.
- Research various options for relocating our current/future Presbytery Office Space.
Update:
- I met regularly with the chair of BP&F, the CFO/Treasurer, and the Controller to address current issues facing BP&F. Relocation of Presbytery Offices to Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church was completed by November 30, 2002. BP&F will present a balanced budget to the Presbytery for adoption in January of 2003. This operating budget will reflect budget cutbacks of approximately $44,000.
7. Develop and nurture a healthy relationship with leaders of various para-church ministries in San Diego County to discuss future partnerships in Youth Ministry/Campus Ministries of Evangelism.
- Initiate contact with para-church leaders from Young Life, Inter Varsity and Navigators.
- Establish Task Force to investigate probability of future partnerships in Evangelism.
Update:
- I spoke in October at the Young Life Leadership Weekend Retreat for all staff and volunteers in San Diego County. I met regularly with the Campus Ministry Task Force investigating a partnership between Faith Presbyterian Church, the Presbytery of San Diego and the Navigators Christian Fellowship. A formal request has been sent to the Synod office to sell the Lindo Paseo house to the SDSU Foundation with assets designated for Campus Ministry in the Presbytery of San Diego. The task force will seek to finalize the partnership in 2003.
8. Develop a ministry of nurture and care for all Pastors and their families.
- Attend Annual West Coast Pastors Conference with Pastors from San Diego Presbytery.
- Establish Pastoral Enrichment Committee to plan and implement Pastoral Enrichment Events.
Update:
- I was registered for the West Coast Pastor's Retreat in April but had to cancel because of medical reasons. I have registered for the same event in 2003. Rev. Barry Moller has agreed to serve as the chair of the Pastoral Enrichment Task Force. Barry and I have met twice to discuss the membership of the task force. Work will begin in 2003.
9. Work with the Presbytery Meetings Committee in reviewing and revitalizing their work so as to enhance our sense of celebration, worship, and mission at meetings of the Presbytery.
- Serve actively as ex-officio member of PMC to plan worship for all Presbytery meetings in 2002.
- Introduce the Presbytery to The Gospel and Culture Network/The Missional Church.
Update:
- In May, Dr. Darrell Guder from Princeton Seminary offered a Pre-Presbytery workshop entitled, "Redefining Evangelism in a Post Christian Context" and preached during the worship service at the Presbytery meeting. Dr. Joseph Small presented a time for Theological Reflection at the September meeting of Presbytery titled, "Why Christology Matters."
10. Work closely with the Missions Committee and GPM Committee to create systems of support, accountability and training for GPM Directors and NCD Pastors.
- Establish a monthly meeting with three GPM Directors for support and accountability.
- Establish quarterly luncheon meeting with Pastors of NCD's for support.
- Serve as ex-officio member on Search Committee for Director, Military Parish Visitors.
Update:
- I met with the three GPM directors each month in 2002. I established a quarterly luncheon with the pastors from our three NCD and two mission churches. I serve on the Search Committee for a new MPV Director. I served as an ex-officio member of the Task Force established by Council to conduct a "Mission Study of our Presbytery Missions." The final report of the task force was adopted by the presbytery in November and referred to Council for implementation.
