Executive Presbyter's Report to Presbytery
"Top Ten Ministry Goals for 2003: First Quarter Update, March 18, 2003"

1. Develop and nurture a healthy relationship with each of the 37 churches in the Presbytery

Update:
  • I continue to be very involved in preaching, teaching and participating in worship in the 37 churches in our Presbytery. I have preached at Westminster, Escondido, First, San Diego (Three-week series) and Solana Beach Pres. I have assisted in officer training for Northminster and spoken to the Senior's ministry at Rancho Bernardo. I attended worship at Discovery at the Center. I am scheduled to preach at First, El Cajon, Brawley and The Vespers Worship Service at White Sands in late March.

2. Work closely with the Human Resources Committee in the oversight, evaluation and realignment of all Presbytery personnel and policies.

Update:
  • Linda Therien has been hired as the new Office Manager and Jeanne Wright has been hired as the new Full-Charge Bookkeeper in our Presbytery office. I am serving as ex-officio member of the committees currently searching for (1) Director, Military Outreach Ministries, (2) Stated Clerk and, (3) Manager, Bargain Bungalow. A search will begin for a part-time Controller in mid-summer. Chuck Andrus has served faithfully as an Interim Controller for the past seven months.

3. Work closely with the Council to implement new organizational structure and Mission Study of Missions Final Report into the life of the presbytery.

Update:
  • In January, I assisted in the planning and leadership of the Executive Committee of Council's bi-annual retreat as well as the first annual Council retreat at White Sands. An orientation luncheon for all Ministry Teams Chairs was hosted at the Presbytery Offices in January.

4. Work closely with the Evangelism Committee to develop a long term vision and strategic plan for New Church Development and Redevelopment ministries in our presbytery.

Update:

  • The Evangelism Committee has met three times in the new year. They are beginning to focus their energies around the five-fold charge of the committee. I serve as an ex-officio member.

5. Work with the Committee on Ministry in strengthening and revitalizing their work.

Update:
  • Over 50% of the COM attended a training workshop sponsored by the Synod on April 1st in Pasadena. Reverend Debbie Rundlett from Pacific Beach was the plenary speaker for the event. Debbie has offered her gifts in service to our COM as a consultant (non-compensated). Debbie served as an Associate EP in the Presbytery of Pittsburgh before coming to San Diego last fall. Her interest is helping COM's to become more "Missional" in their focus. I plan to attend the Interim Pastor's Training Conference in July at Zepher Point.

6. Work with GPM Directors to establish and train Steering Committees for oversight of ministries.

Update:
  • I have scheduled a monthly one-day retreat with the GPM Directors at the White Sands in La Jolla. These days have been great times of team building, fellowship, planning and goal setting. We met in January and February and have scheduled the March retreat for the 25th. Steering Committees are in the process of being established.

7. Work closely with the Campus Ministry Task Force to develop and implement a Campus Ministry Partnership in Evangelism at San Diego State University

Update:
  • A new five-member task force was immediately established to work out the logistics of a three-way partnership in evangelism at the SDSU campus between Faith Presbyterian Church, The Navigators Christian Fellowship and The Presbytery of San Diego. The membership of the task force will include two members from Faith Presbyterian Church, two members from the Presbytery and the Area Director for the Navigators. The task force will report to Council in May.

8. Work with the Pastoral Enrichment Task Force to develop a long term vision and strategic plan for ministries of nurture, care and spiritual enrichment for all pastors and their families.

Update:
  • The Pastoral Enrichment Task Force has yet to meet. Reverend Barry Moller and Reverend Gary Robertson have agreed to work in the leadership of this ministry.

9. Work closely with Communications Ministry Team to better utilize Presbytery Website for enhancing communication with our member churches.

Update:
  • The Communication Ministry Team is meeting regularly to discuss necessary improvements needed on our Website. The Presbytery Docket has been distributed electronically both in January and in March of this year. Elder David Buck from the Village Church in Rancho Santa Fe and Elder Lyle Daun from Fletcher Hills Church have been extremely helpful in leading our Website improvements.

10. Work closely with the Missions Committee to develop a long term vision and strategic plan for mission interpretation as well as the oversight of our two mission churches (Sudanese & Iglesia).

Update:
  • The Missions Committee is planning a retreat for Saturday, March 29, 2003. The purpose of the retreat is to pray, plan and discuss the new charge of the committee since the adoption of the Mission Study Report in November of 2002.
