Rev. Dr. Andrew M. Smith

After serving as pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina for fourteen years, the Rev. Andrew M. Smith was called in August, 2001 as the new Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of San Diego.

Following his sophomore year at Louisiana State University, Andy transferred to Whitworth College in Spokane, where he was encouraged to pursue full-time ministry by his religion professor, F. Dale Brunner, with whom he remains in close contact. Much of Andy's understanding of the Reformed Faith was formed by the brilliant mind of Dr. Brunner.

In 1977, Andy graduated from Whitworth College with a B.A. in Psychology and Pre-Ministry and received his Master of Divinity four years later from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and his Doctor of Ministry in 1999 from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Andy says, "During my adolescent years of rebellion, the Sovereign Lord revealed himself to me through Young Life. I was not raised in the church. I never had a pastor, until I was one. I never attended a Sunday School class until I taught one. I never attended a session meeting, until I moderated one." He has never led a presbytery before, but he believes that he has been called by God to serve in San Diego.

"My interests in ministry in the past several years have focused upon the prophetic nature of the church in society," he says. "The writings of Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continue to have a great influence on my life and ministry."

Andy Smith and Susan Lieber were married in San Diego in 1977; they have three young daughters, Caroline and twins Sydney and Aimee.
