Focus of New Form of Government is on Congregations, Missions

With the publication of the new Form of Government, the Presbyterian Church (USA) is moving intentionally from a Regulatory Model to a Missional Model of doing ministry. The new document, which replaces sections of the Book of Order, describes functions but not structure, which is to be more flexible. “Governing bodies” become councils, and more emphasis is placed on prayer and discernment to achieve consensus.

Key points:
 - Our foundations of Presbyterianism remain unchanged: confessions and statements of faith of the Protestant Reformation;
 - The focus will be on providing leadership for local congregations as missional communities;
 - The presbytery will continue as the central governmental unit. The Presbytery will have the authority and flexibility to assist congregations address “the changing cultural, economic and social changes in our new millennial world.”

Rev. Mark Tammen, director of Constitutional Services of the Office of the General Assembly PC(USA), said in his Pre-Presbytery presentation that the new Form of Government advisory handbooks should be arriving at churches very soon. Eighteen chapters have been condensed and rearranged to nine chapters, he said. Tammen, a pastor as well as an attorney, also preached the sermon during the worship portion of the Presbytery Meeting.

November 11 Designated as Chaplains' Sunday
— Video Available

Pat Kellenbarger, a member of the Presbyterian Council for Chaplains and Military Personnel, is seeking opportunities to provide a Minute for Mission speaker and to show a brief video.

“Several years ago the Presbytery of San Diego proclaimed the Sunday nearest Veterans’ Day in November be set aside to honor and pray for our Presbyterian chaplains serving with our armed forces nationwide,” she said, asking churches to designate November 11 as Chaplains’ Sunday.  “Several active duty Presbyterian chaplains are stationed in the area who may be available to come to give a Minute for Mission on Sunday or to meet with your Session or Mission Committee.”

A new video that tells the chaplains’ story has recently been released in two-minute and 12-minute versions.  Bulletin inserts, brochures and offering envelopes are available as well.
Contact: Pat Kellenbarger at 750 231-9609.
