History
Military Outreach Ministries was begun by the National Presbytery during World War II, under the name Military Parish Visitors, to provide assistance to military families. The San Diego Presbytery assumed responsibility for the San Diego chapter of the ministry in 1967.
Today, San Diego is the only place where Military Outreach remains an active ministry.
Purpose
The purpose of Military Outreach is to share God's love with military personnel and their families by helping to meet some of their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The ministry is guided by the words of Jesus in Matthew 25: "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in …. [W]hatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
Service
There are well over 200,000 military personnel and family members in San Diego County. Due to the county's very high cost of living, many military families experience difficulty making ends meet. That is where Military Outreach steps in. The ministry provides regular food and bread distributions, as well as emergency deliveries of food, formula, or diapers. In addition, the ministry provides items such as furniture, linens, baby items, gently used children's clothing, etc.
Military Outreach also addresses emotional and spiritual needs by providing regular social activities and Bible studies. Free, on-site childcare is provided at these events.
