Evangelism Committee


I.  Membership

The committee shall consist of twelve (12) members divided into three classes of four each. The committee is to be balanced as closely as possible to one-third ministers, one-third laymen, one-third laywomen.

II. Accountability

A. The Standing Committee on Evangelism shall be directly accountable to, and shall report directly to, Presbytery.

B. The Evangelism Committee shall hold stated meetings and may, with due notice, hold special meetings as called by the Chair or by two (2) members of the committee through the Executive Presbyter.

III. Duties

The Presbytery of San Diego's Mission Study calls for a renewed focus on evangelism. The purpose of the Evangelism Committee is to serve as a catalyst for Presbytery-wide efforts of New Church Development as well as the revitalization of congregations in need of growth and renewal.

The Evangelism Committee shall:

A. Lead a deliberate effort to reach out to our non-Christian neighbors in San Diego and Imperial Counties and around the world to introduce them to a personal saving faith in Jesus Christ and active discipleship in the fellowship of the church through a focus on:

1. New Church Development (NCD)

a. Work directly with NCD Steering Committees to provide ongoing support, nurture, stability and growth of current NCD’s in the Presbytery of San Diego.

b. Study demographic research in San Diego and Imperial Counties identifying future New Church Development possibilities with an emphasis on Racial Ethnic New Church Development.

c. Work in consultation with Budget, Property and Finance considering future property issues.

2. Church Revitalization

a. Work directly with churches in the Presbytery in need of redevelopment and/or revitalization.

b. Assist churches in enhancing their evangelistic outreach ministry into immediate neighborhoods through partnerships with various parachurch ministries.

3. Loans and Grants

a. Research and identify various funding sources through the Synod and General Assembly for New Church Development and Church Redevelopment.

b. Research other outside funding sources for New Church Development/ Redevelopment ministries.

B. Host regular consultations between churches throughout the Presbytery currently experiencing effective and creative forms of evangelistic outreach into their local communities/campuses. Report regularly to the Presbytery various “Good News Reports” on effective and creative forms of evangelism currently happening inour Presbytery.

C. Work in consultation with the Committee on Ministry to develop lay pastor training for Hispanic leadership in the Presbytery.
